The book discusses the grave stelai and grave reliefs from the Bosporan kingdom. Occupying the eastern Crimea and the Taman Peninsula on the northern shore of the Black Sea, this ancient Greek state was situated in an important contact zone of the ancient Greek world. The permanent interaction of Greeks and indigenous peoples (the Scythians, others and later the Sarmatians) in this region resulted in a dynamic local culture. Subjected to long-term acculturation processes, this culture reflected elements of Greek and indigenous traditions. In this respect, the grave stelai erected in Bosporan necropoleis and their numerous relief depictions dating from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD are a unique source: they provide us not only with pictorial evidence for local identities, but are, ultimately, also of great value for our understanding of the development and transformation of this local culture in general.

"Roman sarcophagi have fascinated posterity since the Middle Ages, largely because of their mythological reliefs. Living with Myths provides a comprehensive introduction to this important genre, exploring such subjects as the role of the mythological images in everyday life of the time, the messages they convey about the Romans' view of themselves, and the reception of the sarcophagi in later European art and art history. The volume is fully illustrated with high-quality photographs, which enable readers to appreciate the artistic quality of the reliefs and to explore for themselves the messages they convey. Together with the text, which includes analyses of specific sarcophagi, the pictures open up a panorama of Roman cultural history in the 2nd to the early 4th centuries CE."--Publisher's website.

"This study of the different types of funeral architecture in Roman Egypt sheds new light on the question of the contacts between Egypt and the other provinces in the Empire. Funeral architecture in Roman Egypt has been largely neglected by scientists despite abundant archaeological literature on the subject. Yet, besides travel narrations and tales of discoveries, which are not always easily exploitable, a large number of recent accurate archaeological publications contribute to renewing our knowledge of this type of funeral architecture. Thanks to extensive excavations made since the 1980s, our knowledge of necropoles used during the Roman Empire has been considerably enriched. This study includes a catalogue of 325 such funeral sites, 214 of which are well documented, and helps to clarify our understanding of the varied architectural forms to be found in that province: including pit graves with raised surface structures (pyramids, columns and chapels), hypogea with steps or sloping access, rock-cut tombs, sarcophagi placed in the open, sepulchres with surface loculi, and tombs shaped as houses or temples"--Publisher's web site.
